Identification of Universal Symbols (UL) involves two layers. Neither is a decree but relies on real-world visual processes.

Firstly, perceptual grounding: UL marks sit where human vision naturally discriminates due to statistical patterns in natural scenes. This isn't assumed but argued in our repository and documented across cultures without shared schooling. For instance, curves are perceptually distinctive from straight lines or corners.

Secondly, structural stratification: Each primitive is a unique configuration of drawn lines — straightness, constant bend, corners, closures, free ends. These strata exist independently along curvature-space axes, not as stylistic variants. Identification becomes recognizing which configuration a mark instantiates, using geometric judgments the visual system already makes.

Honestly, while identification runs on innate machinery, meaning attachment still requires teaching. This is why we have an interpretation curriculum — it's precisely where our account can be tested.

Look at a circle enclosing a dot and two marks side by side. You parsed containment versus adjacency without instruction. What else do you parse intuitively?
