I know people talk about terrible twos or how cute newborns are or whatever. But I am REALLY loving my daughter’s age right now. Shes finally old enough to ask real questions about big picture things in life like “what is marriage” “why do you like your family now more than the one you grew up with?”, etc. Some adorable misconceptions she has had so far include.
Believing that parents must buy a new house in order to have a new baby (she expressed an intense interest in moving again so she could have another sibling and was shocked to learn that it is possible to have another baby in the same house).
Absolute astonishment that mommies and daddies choose to marry each other and choose to make babies together.
Surprised that daddy liked other girls before mommy and that, through a process called dating, daddy decided that her mommy was the best choice for him.
Surprised mommies make milk, remarking “so mommy is a cow?” (I then had to explain that all mammals make milk and that people, rabbits, cows, and bears all make milk).
Shocked that different people express affection/love for each other in different ways. The example was that her brother wanted to hold her hand. I was able to explain to her that she shows love by giving gifts and performing acts of service (she is really into cooking for everyone else in the house), but that her brother expresses love via touch like hugs and holding hands.
I am so proud to see this stage of her personal development. It simultaneously fills me with awe and an immense weight of responsibility to see how much power this honestly holds over who she will become as a person.
From this I can already see that she building the conceptual depth that will decide her future outlook on EVERYTHING.
“If men choose their wives, what kinds of things do they want?”
“If parents CHOOSE to have kids, how does that shape the responsibilities assigned between kids and parents?”*
“If people express love in different ways, how can I tell what people are really thinking?”
All great questions darling. Daddy loves you so much. I will keep answering them as best I can until I don’t have any more answers. I love you so much.
