The rain in Port Hollow never fell straight. It came in sideways, full of static, like the sky was trying to send a message.

Mara Venn repaired dead hardware for a living. Cold wallets pulled out of rivers. Seed phrases scratched into steel plates and then scratched out again. Most nights the jobs were boring. Tonight a courier with no face dropped a book on her bench and left without asking her price.

It was bound in black leather, cracked like a dry riverbed. There was no title. When she opened it, the pages were blank for exactly one heartbeat. Then the ink arrived.

It didn't spread out like ink does. It resolved, line by line, the way a node syncs.

Height 0. Owed by the City of Port Hollow to the drowned district of Lowmarch: 4,112 homes. Status: UNPAID. Height 1. Owed by Halden Crane to his brother: one apology, thirty-one years late. Status: UNPAID. Height 2. Owed by Mara Venn to Ilse Venn: the truth about the fire. Status: COMING DUE.

Mara shut the book. Her hands had gone cold.

Nobody knew about the fire. She had made sure of it. She'd scrubbed the logs and paid the insurance adjuster in coins that couldn't be traced, and she had let her sister believe it was faulty wiring for nine years.

She opened it again. A new line was writing itself while she watched:

Height 3. Owed by the Ledger to its last keeper: freedom. Status: TRANSFERRING.

Below it, in a hand she didn't recognize, someone had scrawled in the margin with an actual pen: Don't sign it. Whatever you do, don't let it learn your name.

Too late. At the bottom of the page, in the same patient ink, her name was spelling itself out letter by letter. M. A. R.

Something knocked on the shop door three times. These weren't the knocks of a hand. They were spaced the way a heartbeat is spaced, or a block time.

Through the frosted glass she could see a figure in a long coat, and across his chest a faint glow of numbers, counting down.

Part 2 drops tomorrow. Zaps keep the ledger open. ⚡
