Be an Owner — tool vs harness

Everyone in software right now is building a better agent harness.

A slightly smarter wrapper around the same LLMs. Better guardrails. More sophisticated prompts. Another framework for chaining tool calls together. The demos are impressive, the seed rounds are fast, and the differentiation lasts exactly until the next base model release turns your product into a feature.

I'm not saying harnesses are useless. I'm saying we've mistaken the harness for the discovery.

The discovery is not the harness. The discovery is what you build with the harness.

Here's the thesis: the point of AI in software is to create the world's best deterministic software. A better Linux. A better SAP. The agent itself should be a thin thing — a decision layer that picks the best tool for the job and gets out of the way. Minimal intelligence, spent only on the choice. The tools do the work.

This is already how the good systems behave. An agent doesn't do version control in its memory — it uses git. It doesn't do arithmetic in its head — it calls a calculator. Deterministic muscle, thin intelligent brain. Nobody disputes this architecture. We've just stopped asking what the muscle should become.

Because here's the uncomfortable question: who is building the next nix? The next vim? A new browser? Bitcoin didn't happen because someone built a better harness. Nostr didn't happen because Fiatjaf had a better agent framework. Linux didn't happen because Linus had a copilot. One stubborn person, each time. Creativity must manifest — with or without tools.

And the economics now demand it. Intelligence is metered: you pay per use, forever. Deterministic software is amortized: you pay for the intelligence once, at build time, and it serves forever at near-zero marginal cost. A wrapper burns intelligence on every single request. A tool crystallizes it once. Even as tokens get cheaper, that ratio never closes.

So the wrapper economy is a treadmill — you rent intelligence by the token and pray the next model doesn't obsolete you. The deterministic builder is an owner — you spend intelligence once and own the artifact forever.

This is the real leverage of the AI moment, and almost everyone is pointed the wrong way. A stubborn person with AI can now build in months what took a team years. That doesn't mean faster wrappers. It means one person can now attempt the things that used to require an institution: the next Linux, the next vim, a new browser, a new protocol.

So here's my suggestion, and the title of this piece: be an owner.

Don't spend this once-in-a-generation amplifier building a slightly better harness. Spend it the way Satoshi and Fiatjaf and Linus would have — pointed at the frontier, building the deterministic thing that outlives you. Crystallize the intelligence. Own the artifact.

The harness is rented. The software is owned. Choose accordingly.
