Glow App Is For Everybody

Testing Bitcoin Lightning wallets, for me, is better than watching baseball🥱. The Lightning Network is like email for payments. Brick-and-mortar businesses are beginning to accept payments over this monetary email network.
I use this monetary network by setting aside a certain number of sats every month that I call my blow money. The term is borrowed from the nocoiner known for saying “Cash is King,” Dave Ramsey.
In the old days, people thought you could only use Bitcoin to buy drugs, but the only drug I ever bought with the cryptocurrency was coffee. I use it to buy computers, gift cards, burgers, and non-alcoholic beer*. You can buy real beer with it too, but I don’t drink that stuff. This blow money is the part of my budget I allow myself to spend on whatever I want with no judgment. For those sats, I use Glow Wallet made by the Breez team. They also make the Misty Wallet, which I wrote about here.
Glow Wallet Has Passkey Support#
The passkey is the easiest self-custodial onboarding experience I've ever seen. It makes backups as easy as a click of a button. Again, this is my blow money, not my generational wealth. The passkey makes it easy to restore or use on multiple devices because the passkey is stored in your Google account. Think this sounds sketch? No problem. You can use other passkeys too, but this is an easy-button setup for a hot wallet. The easy button is great for lunch money. This is blow money I plan on spending anyway, not sats I have earmarked for my grandchildren. It's sats I spend on coffee and non-alcoholic beer. Could I stack more sats if I stopped drinking coffee and near beer? Yes, but it's nice to splurge a couple times every 4,320 blocks (30 days). Besides, if a corporation can buy dollars with bitcoin, plebs can buy coffee.
BIP 39 Support#

Glow App also has a BIP39 backup! Google Passkey is not required. You can write down 12 words instead. Each word actually represents a four-digit number like you might use to withdraw paper money with your debit card. Therefore, a 12-word backup is like 12 PINs required to spend your money.
Even if the wallet fails, you can import these 12 words into another wallet and restore your balance, at least the bitcoin. I'm not sure how stablecoin backups work. Make sure you double-check though. The words must be in order. If you make a mistake and never recover your password, consider those sats a donation to the network. You can do that if you want, but it is impossible to spend sats time-locked with a lost key. Start with lunch money, not life-changing money.
This is a great wallet to begin your self-custody journey*. Brown-bag your lunch one day. Sell the fiat you save for bitcoin. Use that lunch money to learn self-custody. If you lose 12,000 sats, hopefully, it's not the end of the world.
Glow Has A Progressive Web App

You can use Glow as both a PWA or an app you download from the App Store or Google Play. This means you can access the wallet even if it is taken off the application stores. PWA, for non-shadowy super coders, stands for Progressive Web App. It sounds like tax policy, but it's a fancy name that means an app on a web browser.
This progressive web app can be used to restore your wallet on a phone, computer, or laptop. This is one of the sexiest things about the wallet from my perspective. I've been looking for a PWA that has a Lightning address for some time. The fact that most wallets are locked behind the walled garden of the major stores concerns me. Designing it to be used as a PWA makes it more decentralized. App-only apps are easy to shut down if asked by an ABC department.
I only wish it had Nostr Wallet Connect, but that's kind of a powerful user feature.
How do I get bitcoin? There is only one way.
- Sell something for bitcoin. This year, I met a dude who sold baklava and cleaned toilets to get bitcoin. He brings free baklava to the conference now. Nowadays, some companies allow you to convert your paycheck (or a certain percentage of it) into bitcoin. I'm not an economist, but this is selling your labor for bitcoin. Most bitcoiners sell digital dollars for bitcoin. They say "buy Bitcoin," but tomato to-motto. They get paid in dollars. They sell those dollars for bitcoin. The Glow App makes it easy to sell dollars for bitcoin on Cash App or Moonpay. Or... you can just get paid in bitcoin on Cash App. Is this KYC-free? No, but the lunch lady won't know where you got your sats from when you use the Lightning Network ... unless you work for the NSA😉.
Customizable Lightning Address

The Glow wallet comes with a Lightning address and is interoperable with the Lightning Network. This feature is best described as an email address for money. It is mostly used by people into bitcoin, but the Lightning Network makes it easy to do something called atomic swaps. Most cryptocurrencies are pump-and-dump schemes similar to the penny stock scams people sent to fax machines in the 1990s. I can only think of two other cryptocurrencies that have any widespread monetary use cases besides bitcoin: stablecoins* and Monero.
There is not much difference between stablecoins and traditional digital fiat currency. Both can be shut off at the source, but many people still prefer them because freedom money is like a roller coaster for those using the dollar as their unit of account. They either can't stomach the wild swings of freedom money or like to gamble at crypto casinos. I don't gamble anymore and I have access to US bank accounts.
Stablecoins are backed by short-term US Treasuries. If this is not something that factors into your threat model, you can get paid in stablecoins. I suspect that's many people all around the world because stablecoins are probably the most used cryptocurrency in the world because people prefer the government stamp of approval on a coin over the timestamp of code run by The People. These are just the facts, ma'am. Just the facts. My ideology does not pay for your groceries. That is why I think this is an awesome wallet even though I personally do not use stablecoins*. Some people might need them to feed their families. I don't judge them.
Bitcoin is for everybody, even stable coin users. The Glow app treats stablecoins like bank accounts used to treat savings accounts. Banks used to pay interest on money people saved. There are some exceptions, but the big banks basically pay 0.01%. My bank charges eight bucks per month if I keep my balance below $1,000. I have a negative balance every month. It's like a fee for a balance that looks like doughnuts.
If you choose to hold your balance in USD stablecoins, you can earn yield on your balance. The yield is paid in sats. That means you even earn bitcoin if you use stablecoins. I do not know the interest rate, but I suspect it is better than savins account fees.
That savings balance probably keeps getting more valuable over time. It's volatile, so it will go up and down, but USD bucks only buy less and less stuff as time marches on. Of course, this is not financial advice and it is definitely not legal advice. The USG is trying to pass the Clarity Act, which has something to do with bank protectionism or whatever. I'm not a lawyer and I don't exactly know what that means.
Try The Glow App Today

The Glow App is a wallet that lets you use money as simply as sending and receiving email. It is electronic cash and faster than using paper cash money. You have to drive to a bank to get paper cash money. A lot of places won't take cash these days, but more and more brick-and-mortar stores in the real world are beginning to accept bitcoin. You can find these places on Cash App or BTCMap. [Many Square terminals accept bitcoin. It is no longer "the future of money." Bitcoin is the present of money.
I want you to try the Glow App because I want you to use this new currency. Email money addresses are useful. I made a Lightning tip jar a while back. All you need to use it is a Lightning address, one of the money email addresses I talked about above. I know a lot of people don't like bitcoin for whatever reason, but the Glow App gives you an option.
The thing about people working for tips is they often need the money today. They can't wait for bitcoin to recover after a 50% dip without living in their car. I want bitcoin to be for everybody. Everybody means the shoe shine boy or the woman refilling your water. Everybody is not just the suits with access to cheap credit. Bitcoin is for everybody.

* Full disclosure: I own 79 cents worth of stablecoins because I tested atomic swaps between bitcoin and stablecoins. You can find more money in my couch cushions. I'm not a Bitcoin maximalist. I am a fiat minimalist.
