Nostr + Lightning: Building an Open Social and Payment Layer for the Internet

Nostr provides portable identity and decentralized social communication, while Lightning enables fast, low-cost Bitcoin payments. Together, they create a powerful foundation for social applications where users can own their identity, send and receive sats, use Lightning Addresses, receive Zaps, and interact with wallets without depending entirely on a centralized platform. The article also explores how NWC, Cashu, NIP-57, and NIP-60 extend this ecosystem toward portable wallets, micropayments, ecash, AI agents, and a more open social economy.

The internet has always had a strange separation between communication and money.

We can publish a message globally in seconds. We can build an online identity that follows us across applications. But when it comes to sending value, we usually have to leave the platform, create an account somewhere else, trust another company, and use a completely different identity.

Nostr and Lightning are changing that model.

Nostr provides an open protocol for identity, social communication, and data distribution. Lightning provides a fast payment network for Bitcoin. Together, they create the foundation for something much bigger than "social media with a tipping button."

They make it possible to build applications where identity, communication, and value can interact through open protocols.

1. What Is Nostr?#

Nostr is a protocol rather than a single social network.

At its core, users create events, sign those events with their cryptographic keys, and publish them to relays. Clients can then retrieve and display those events.

NIP-01 defines the basic event and relay protocol. A Nostr event contains information such as:

Clients communicate with relays using WebSockets and messages such as EVENT, REQ, and CLOSE.

This creates an important distinction:

Nostr is not nostr.com.

There is no single website that owns the protocol.

You can have:

User → Nostr Client → Relay A

while another application can use:

Same User → Another Nostr Client → Relay B

The user's identity is based on cryptographic keys rather than a username/password controlled by one platform.

That opens the door to portable identities.

2. The Missing Piece: Money

Nostr already gives us an interesting model for identity and communication.

But social applications become much more interesting when users can exchange value directly.

Imagine:

Alice publishes a post.

Bob likes it.

Bob wants to support Alice.

Instead of:

Like → Advertisement → Platform Revenue → Creator Program → Bank

we can have:

Like → Zap → Lightning → Alice

The payment can happen in seconds, while the social interaction remains connected to the Nostr identity.

This is where Lightning becomes extremely important.

3. What Is Lightning?

The Lightning Network is a Bitcoin payment network designed for fast, low-cost transactions.

Instead of putting every small payment directly on the Bitcoin blockchain, Lightning allows payments to move through a network of payment channels and nodes.

That makes it particularly interesting for:

For a social network, this matters because small payments suddenly become practical.

Sending a few hundred sats doesn't need to feel like making a traditional bank transfer.

4. Nostr + Lightning = Zaps

One of the most visible integrations between Nostr and Lightning is the Zap.

NIP-57 defines Lightning Zaps.

The protocol describes a flow where a Nostr client discovers a recipient's LNURL-pay endpoint, creates a signed zap request, receives a Lightning invoice, and pays that invoice. After payment, the recipient's LNURL service can publish a zap receipt back to Nostr.

Conceptually:

Nostr User A
     |
     | Zap
     v
Nostr Client
     |
     | LNURL / Lightning Address
     v
Recipient Lightning Service
     |
     | Invoice
     v
Lightning Network
     |
     | Payment
     v
Recipient Wallet
     |
     | Zap Receipt
     v
Nostr Relay
     |
     v
Nostr Clients

The important part is that the social event and payment event can be connected.

That means a Nostr client can display:

⚡ 1,000 sats from Alice

on a post, profile, article, video, or other supported object.

5. Lightning Addresses Make This Human-Friendly

Raw Lightning invoices are not designed to be someone's permanent identity.

An invoice is normally generated for a particular payment.

A Lightning Address solves a different problem.

Instead of asking someone:

"Send me a Lightning invoice."

you can give them:

alice@example.com

or, in a Nostr-oriented ecosystem:

alice@getzap.me

The sender's wallet resolves the address into an LNURL-pay endpoint and obtains an invoice for the requested amount.

This creates an important separation:

Nostr public key

→ identifies the person on Nostr.

Lightning Address

→ identifies where Lightning payments can be requested.

Those identities can be connected without requiring the social application itself to become the user's bank.

6. The Interesting Part: Portable Identity + Portable Payments

This is where the architecture becomes much more interesting.

Consider a user:

npub...

with:

alice@getzap.me

The user could potentially interact with multiple Nostr clients while maintaining the same Nostr identity.

The same Lightning Address can also be used by different Lightning-compatible applications.

That means the user's relationship with the application becomes less dependent on one centralized database.

The application is no longer necessarily saying:

"You have 1,500 points because our database says so."

Instead:

"This is your Nostr identity, and this is the Lightning destination associated with it."

That is a very different model.

7. Where Nostr Relays Fit

A common misconception is that Nostr relays are wallets.

They are not.

A relay primarily handles Nostr events.

For example:

User
 |
 | signed event
 v
Relay
 |
 +----> stores event
 |
 +----> distributes event
 |
 +----> other clients retrieve event

Lightning payments are handled by Lightning infrastructure.

So a complete Nostr + Lightning application normally contains several layers:

NOSTR
                      |
             +--------+--------+
             | |
          Client Relay
             |
             |
        Nostr Identity
             |
             v
       Lightning Address
             |
             v
      LNURL-pay endpoint
             |
             v
      Lightning Wallet
             |
             v
      Lightning Network

This separation is powerful because each component can specialize.

8. Nostr Wallet Connect

There is another important piece for modern Nostr applications:

Nostr Wallet Connect (NWC).

NWC allows an application to communicate with a user's Lightning wallet through a Nostr-based wallet connection.

Conceptually:

NostrFeed
   |
   | NWC
   v
User Wallet
   |
   v
Lightning Network

The application does not necessarily need direct access to the user's wallet seed.

Instead, it can operate through a restricted wallet connection with specific capabilities.

For example, a wallet connection might allow:

This creates a much cleaner security model than putting a wallet's private key directly inside a web application.

9. Why Wallet Architecture Matters

Once an application starts handling real sats, the architecture becomes much more important.

There are several separate concepts that should not be mixed together:

Identity#

Who is the user?

Nostr public key

Payment destination#

Where should a Lightning payment go?

Lightning Address / LNURL

Wallet connection#

Which wallet can perform an operation?

NWC

Payment#

What actually moved across Lightning?

Lightning invoice / payment hash

Social proof#

What should appear on Nostr?

Zap request / zap receipt

Keeping these concepts separate makes the system easier to reason about and audit.

10. Cashu Adds Another Layer

Lightning is not the only interesting payment technology in the Nostr ecosystem.

Cashu introduces Chaumian ecash.

Nostr's NIP-60 defines a way for Cashu wallet state to be represented through Nostr events.

According to NIP-60, a Cashu wallet can have a wallet event (kind: 17375), encrypted proof events (kind: 7375), and optional spending-history events (kind: 7376). The goal is to make wallet state accessible across applications while allowing the wallet to follow the user.

The architecture can therefore look like:

NOSTR
                      |
        +-------------+-------------+
        | |
    Social Data Wallet State
        | |
      Relays NIP-60
                                    |
                                  Cashu
                                    |
                                  Mint
                                    |
                               Lightning

Cashu and Lightning are not identical.

Lightning is a payment network.

Cashu is an ecash protocol involving a mint.

But they can complement each other.

11. Why Cashu Is Interesting for Social Applications

Social applications have many tiny transactions:

A user might receive dozens or hundreds of small payments.

Cashu can be interesting for this type of environment because ecash tokens can move between users without every individual transfer becoming a Lightning routing event.

A possible architecture is:

Alice
  |
  | Cashu
  v
Bob

        |
        | Mint settlement
        v

   Lightning Network

This gives developers another design option.

12. NostrFeed as an Example

This is the direction platforms such as NostrFeed can explore.

Instead of building a traditional social network with a wallet bolted onto it, the architecture can be designed around three connected layers:

Social#

Nostr
+
Relays
+
Nostr identities

Payments#

Lightning
+
Lightning Address
+
NWC
+
Zaps

Ecash#

Cashu
+
NIP-60
+
Mint

The user experience can then become:

Create Nostr identity
        |
        v
Create wallet
        |
        v
Get Lightning Address
        |
        v
Post on Nostr
        |
        v
Receive Zap
        |
        v
Hold Lightning / Cashu
        |
        v
Send sats

That is much closer to an open social economy than a conventional social network.

13. The Important Difference: Protocol vs Platform

This distinction is critical.

A centralized social platform generally looks like:

COMPANY
                |
      +---------+---------+
      | | |
    Users Posts Payments

The company controls most of the infrastructure.

Nostr enables:

Users
  |
  +---- Client A
  |
  +---- Client B
  |
  +---- Client C
        |
       Relays

Lightning enables:

Wallet A
    |
 Lightning Network
    |
 Wallet B

Together:

OPEN PROTOCOLS

       NOSTR LIGHTNING
         | |
      Identity Money
         | |
      Events Payments
         | |
      Relays Lightning nodes
         \ /
          \ /
           +------ USER -----+

The application becomes a participant in an ecosystem rather than the ecosystem itself.

14. But Decentralization Does Not Automatically Mean Better

There is an important engineering reality here.

Using Nostr and Lightning does not automatically make an application decentralized, secure, or censorship-resistant.

You still need to solve:

Nostr itself also relies on relays for event distribution and storage. Research into the ecosystem has identified relay availability and financial sustainability as important challenges.

The protocol gives developers new primitives.

Engineering quality still determines whether the product is reliable.

15. Payment State Must Be Treated as a State Machine

This is particularly important for developers building wallets.

Never assume:

invoice created
      =
payment completed

A robust payment system should explicitly track states.

For example:

CREATED
   |
   v
PENDING
   |
   +------> EXPIRED
   |
   v
PAID
   |
   v
SETTLED

For a Cashu mint:

QUOTE_CREATED
      |
      v
PAYMENT_PENDING
      |
      v
PAYMENT_CONFIRMED
      |
      v
TOKENS_ISSUED

And for melting Cashu back into Lightning:

MELT_QUOTE_CREATED
        |
        v
PAYMENT_PENDING
        |
        v
PAYMENT_SETTLED
        |
        v
TOKENS_SPENT

This distinction becomes extremely important when building transaction history.

A UI should not simply display:

"Payment"

because the user needs to know whether the payment is:

Pending, successful, failed, expired, or reversed.

16. The Future: Social Applications as Financial Interfaces

The most interesting possibility isn't simply:

"Nostr has Bitcoin tips."

It is much larger.

Imagine a Nostr application where a user can:

Publish

→ receive zaps

Chat

→ pay another user

Join a community

→ pay a small membership fee

Read an article

→ pay 10 sats

Use an AI agent

→ pay per request

Download a file

→ pay 50 sats

Support a developer

→ send sats automatically

Buy digital goods

→ settle instantly

The social protocol becomes the identity layer.

Lightning becomes the payment layer.

Cashu can become an ecash layer.

And applications become interfaces connecting these protocols.

17. AI + Nostr + Lightning

This becomes even more interesting with AI agents.

Imagine an autonomous Nostr agent that can:

  1. Discover information.
  2. Publish a Nostr event.
  3. Receive a request.
  4. Pay another service.
  5. Purchase an API call.
  6. Receive the result.
  7. Publish the result.
  8. Receive sats from users.

The architecture becomes:

Nostr
                |
          AI Agent Identity
                |
        +-------+-------+
        | |
      Data Payments
        | |
     Relays Lightning
                        |
                       NWC
                        |
                      Wallet

This creates the possibility of machine-to-machine payments over open protocols.

An AI agent doesn't necessarily need a traditional bank account for every interaction.

It could have a Nostr identity and a controlled Lightning wallet.

18. What Developers Should Build

If you are building in this ecosystem, don't start with:

"How do I add a Bitcoin button?"

Start with:

"What should the user's identity, payment, and ownership model look like?"

Then design the system around protocols.

A practical architecture might be:

┌───────────────┐
                    │ Nostr Client │
                    └───────┬───────┘
                            |
                    ┌───────v───────┐
                    │ Nostr Identity│
                    └───────┬───────┘
                            |
             ┌──────────────┼──────────────┐
             | | |
             v v v
          Relays Lightning Cashu
             | | |
             | NWC |
             | | |
             | Wallet |
             | | |
             +--------------+---------------+
                            |
                     Application Layer
                            |
                Social / AI / Commerce

The important principle is composability.

Don't unnecessarily own every layer.

Use open protocols where they make sense.

19. The Real Promise

Nostr provides something that traditional social networks rarely provide:

portable identity and an open communication protocol.

Lightning provides something traditional payment platforms rarely provide:

an open, programmable network for moving Bitcoin.

Cashu provides another primitive:

ecash that can be integrated into user-controlled wallets and Nostr applications.

Together, they point toward a different type of internet.

Not:

Social network → company account → company wallet → company rules.

But:

Identity → protocol → application → wallet → value

The user can move between applications without necessarily leaving their identity and financial relationships behind.

20. Nostr + Lightning Is Bigger Than Zaps

Zaps are only the beginning.

The deeper idea is that communication and value can exist on interoperable protocols.

Nostr gives us:

Identity + Events + Social Graph

Lightning gives us:

Payments + Liquidity + Global Settlement

Cashu gives us:

Ecash + Small Payments + Wallet Portability

And applications such as NostrFeed can bring these primitives together into a usable experience.

The real opportunity isn't to build another centralized social network with a Lightning wallet.

It is to build applications where:

Your identity is portable.

Your social data is interoperable.

Your payments are native.

Your wallet can move with you.

And the protocols remain open.

That is the more interesting future of Nostr + Lightning.

⚡ Social protocols for communication. Bitcoin protocols for value. Open applications connecting the two.

That is where things get interesting.
