22,000 Steps - what is the secret to anti-ageing?

It’s Sunday.

The sun is shining.

I am out for a walk along Brighton Beach, taking my daughters and dog to a playground, for an afternoon adventure.

As is often the case we pause to re-arrange the pram setup.

My 3.5 year old Ruby wants to stop scootering and jump on the back seat.

Fair enough.

As we do so we bumped into John.

We’d never met before, but he clearly wanted to say hi to the kids, and so we started chatting as we were walking along.

He was out for his afternoon walk as well.

Deep tan.

Perspiring lightly.

Full of smiles, questions, and thoughtful answers.

Being an extrovert I welcome these situations.

Turns out he’s 74, and does 14km of walking everyday, which is a huge 22,000 steps.

Good effort!

My wife and I are aiming for a minimum of 10,000 steps per day…

He’s absolutely flying along as I push the pram.

Then he really caught my attention.

“The key frankly is fasting”

“Nice! What does a day look like for you?”

“One coffee in the morning, big bowl of fruit at 5pm with lots of Avocado and Blueberries, followed by a chicken or fish main meal at 7.30pm.”

Fascinating.

Indeed, you have to search long and hard to find any Doctor’s that would recommend such a habit.

What a great conversation we had, totally by random, as our stars aligned to share some time together.

What a journey life is hey!

I am so grateful we get to gain experiences like this everyday, and as a 35 year old I relish the chance to learn from people older than me, at any opportunity.

What was your profession?

Where are you from originally?

How do you feel?

We could have talked for 21,000 more steps I am sure, but the playground we were aiming for hove into view, so we bid our farewells and cracked on.

Good luck John!
Wishing you the very best for your retirement.

Best, Jake

Ps - this interaction left me more inspired than ever to really delve into the benefits of fasting, a topic I’ve been reading about, and also testing on myself. I love the fact it’s so simple, so counter-culture, and so sovereign. One literally needs themselves, some water, and some time… (which explains why the average Doctor cannot be incentivised to make money recommending it…!)
