Introduction#
Mangatsu (available at mangatsu.3nostr.com) is an open‑source manga reader built on the Nostr protocol. By harnessing Nostr’s decentralised, cryptographically signed event network, Mangatsu gives manga fans a censorship‑resistant, privacy‑first platform for discovering, reading and sharing manga without the need for traditional centralised servers.
Why Nostr for Manga?#
- Censorship resistance – Content is stored as signed events across a mesh of relays, making it hard for any single authority to block or alter manga files.
- User‑controlled data – Readers keep full control of their reading history, bookmarks and preferences, stored locally or on self‑hosted relays.
- Interoperability – Nostr’s simple JSON event format lets Mangatsu integrate with other Nostr‑based services (e.g., comment threads, recommendation bots) without bespoke APIs.
Core Features#
- Relay‑agnostic browsing – Connects to any public or private Nostr relay, automatically discovering manga uploads published as
mangaevents. - Secure, signed uploads – Creators sign each chapter with their private key, guaranteeing authenticity and preventing tampering.
- Offline reading – Chapters can be cached locally; the reader works without an active internet connection after the initial fetch.
- Customisable UI – Light/dark themes, page‑turn gestures and adjustable zoom cater to diverse reading preferences.
- Community annotations – Users can attach signed comments or recommendations to specific panels, fostering discussion without a central forum.
- Cross‑platform – The web‑based front‑end runs on desktop browsers, mobile Safari/Chrome and can be wrapped as a PWA for a native‑like experience.
Technical Architecture#
- Front‑end (React + Vite) – A modern React application compiled with Vite for rapid loading. It talks to Nostr relays via the
nostr-toolslibrary. - Nostr Event Model
- Kind 30023 – Custom event kind for manga metadata (title, author, series ID).
- Kind 30024 – Chapter payload, containing base64‑encoded image slices or links to IPFS/Filecoin blobs.
- Kind 1 – Standard Nostr notes for community comments.
- Relay Layer – Mangatsu does not host its own relay; it defaults to a curated list of reliable public relays and lets users add private relays for personal collections.
- Storage – Images are stored off‑chain (IPFS, Arweave, or encrypted S3 buckets). The event only holds a content identifier (CID) and a cryptographic hash for verification.
- Authentication – Users generate a Nostr key pair in‑browser; the public key serves as their identity. No passwords, no email required.
The entire stack is open source and can be self‑hosted, enabling communities to spin up their own manga ecosystems.
Community and Contributions#
Mangatsu’s repository (github.com/imattua/mangatsu) follows a contributor‑friendly workflow:
- Issues & feature requests – A well‑organised issue tracker invites suggestions ranging from UI tweaks to new relay support.
- Pull requests – CI pipelines run ESLint, Prettier and Jest tests to maintain code quality.
- Documentation – A comprehensive
README.mdand a/docsfolder detail deployment steps, relay configuration and how to publish manga events. - Translations – UI strings are externalised, encouraging community translations for non‑English readers.
