The same face can make a very different impression depending on the photo. A headshot for a work profile and a photo for a dating app are trying to do different jobs, so a few choices should change between them.
Work profile: easy to recognise#
- Face the camera, head and shoulders in frame.
- Plain, uncluttered background.
- Soft, even light from a window in front of you.
- A relaxed smile; people trust faces that look approachable.
The aim is that a colleague can match you in a video call or a lobby.
Dating photo: shows what you're like#
- Wider framing, with some context: a hobby, a place, friends (but be the clear main subject).
- Natural light outdoors is flattering.
- Genuine expressions beat posed ones.
- Avoid heavy filters; mismatches with real life backfire.
What stays the same#
- Hold the camera at or slightly above eye level and step back; close phone lenses enlarge the nose.
- Use a recent photo.
- Pick a photo friends say looks like you.
Where AI face analysis fits#
An AI face score can show how lighting or angle changes the result between two photos, which is useful for comparing options. It isn't a verdict on you. The how it works page on Free Attractiveness Test explains what the score measures, and the privacy page explains how photos are handled.
