People live empty and meaningless lives, they walk around in a certain trance, stunned by the news and the rather boring responsibilities of modern life. Talking to a common person in modern times basically boils down to a few words exchanged about the weather, some jargon about life and half a dozen sentences about some current media topic. I hate this kind of low conversation and therefore I don't have the habit of talking to the average guy.
"We become what we cling to." -Don Quixote
No one is going anywhere, everyone just lives waiting for tomorrow, with nothing to fight for, nothing to protect and nothing to love. There is a famous phrase, which I don't remember the authorship of, which says “every man needs a war to fight, an adventure to live and a maiden to love/rescue”.
In modernity we don't have wars, and any demonstration of bellicosity such as speaking more firmly and not being willing to bow down to the enemy, or a person's own posture are considered offensive and therefore have become a taboo, men have to remain silent and quiet.
Adventures are dangerous and childish and therefore discouraged, it's better to get a job at the bank to have a comfortable life, they say.
And finally, loving and rescuing maidens is a cliché, something from other times, that doesn't exist anymore, women are powerful and don't need any man to rescue them, a man who thinks like that is regressive.
I recently finished reading what I think was the best book of the year (2021) so far, “The Napoleon of Notting Hill”. In it, a boy gathers a small group and fights against the most powerful neighborhoods in London and even faces the king himself with the aim of protecting his “sacred neighborhood” of Notting Hill. And as the famous Canadian psychiatrist Jordan Peterson said:
"The purpose of life is to find the greatest burden you can bear and carry it." -Jordan B. Peterson
We all have something that only we can do, something unique and great in its own way, because between us, living a life of pessimism, difficulties and trivial responsibilities, a life where there is never anything greater, just the gossip on the corner or the Media news is not living, it is slowly withering away.
“I would rather live a short and glorious life than a long one in obscurity.” -Alexander, the Great
