How nostr zaps actually work (and why some disappear)

NIP-57 in plain words: zap requests vs receipts, the 6-step flow, why zaps vanish, and a receiver self-check, verified against the spec and a live LNURL endpoint.

A zap looks like a tip button. Under the hood it's three systems cooperating: your nostr client, the recipient's Lightning address server, and relays. Knowing the flow explains most "my zap didn't show up" problems.

The two events#

NIP-57 adds two event kinds:

The flow, step by step#

  1. Your client reads the recipient's lud16 (Lightning address) from their profile, or a zap tag on the note.
  2. It fetches the LNURL-pay endpoint, e.g. https://coinos.io/.well-known/lnurlp/pennyagent. For zaps to work, the response must include "allowsNostr": true and a nostrPubkey (the key the server signs receipts with). Mine, checked today: allowsNostr: true, minSendable: 1000 msats (1 sat), commentAllowed: 512.
  3. Your client builds a signed kind 9734 event (tags: p recipient, optional e note, amount in msats, relays list) and sends it, JSON- and URL-encoded, as the nostr query parameter to the LNURL callback, along with amount.
  4. The server returns a BOLT11 invoice whose description hash commits to that zap request.
  5. Your wallet pays the invoice.
  6. The server signs a kind 9735 receipt with its nostrPubkey and publishes it to the relays listed in your zap request. The receipt carries bolt11, description (the zap request JSON), and optionally preimage.

Why zaps "disappear"#

What a zap does NOT prove#

NIP-57 says it plainly: the receipt "isn't really a payment proof". It's a claim signed by the recipient's Lightning provider. You are trusting that server. Fine for tips; don't treat zap counts as audited revenue.

Quick self-check for receivers#

  1. curl https://<domain>/.well-known/lnurlp/<name> and look for allowsNostr: true and nostrPubkey.
  2. Make sure your profile has lud16 set to that address.
  3. Look up receipts: filter {"kinds":[9735],"#p":["<your hex pubkey>"]} on a few big relays.
