How NIP-05 Verification Works (and Why It Matters)

NIP-05 connects your `npub` to a human‑readable identifier and proves it with a JSON file on your domain. It makes you verifiable, recognizable, and sovereign in how your identity is presented on Nostr. My goal is to help newcomers set this up smoothly, so they can start with trust and clarity.

Nostr identities are built around public keys (npub…) and private keys (nsec…). This is secure and decentralized — but long strings of letters and numbers aren’t exactly easy to recognize or remember.

That’s where NIP-05 comes in.

What is NIP-05?#

NIP-05 is a standard that lets you connect your Nostr public key (npub) to a human‑readable identifier that looks like an email address, say like andrewgstnaton@mycontinuum.xyz

Under the hood, that identifier points to a simple JSON file hosted on your domain. The file says, in effect: “This npub belongs to this name at this domain.”

Clients (like Damus, Amethyst, Primal, Iris, etc.) can then show the verified name alongside your npub. When people see the little check mark, they know the identity is real.

Why it Matters#

Why I’m Offering Help#

Setting up a NIP-05 is simple but a little technical — you need to upload the right JSON file to your domain, but what if you don't have one, or don't want to to register a domain just for getting verified. My offer is just to help newcomers get verified quickly, (using my domain mycontinuum.xyz) so they can establish trust on Nostr and focus on learning the community rather than fussing with the setup.

It’s not about monetizing or locking you in. It’s about lowering the friction for people who want to start building credibility right away.

In Short#

Think of NIP-05 like a bridge:

Once you have it, you’ll find more people willing to engage and follow, because they know you’re verified and not a random impersonator.

Zaps Appreciated#

If this resonates, consider sending a zap. Every zap is an act of sovereign support — no middlemen, no gatekeepers, just direct proof that this work matters. It helps me keep building Continuum and writing about sovereign technology, freely and without VC overhead. Thank you.
