The AI buildout has a bitcoin mining problem.
GPUs are sitting in warehouses waiting for power. GPU-collateralized debt is piling up. Credit markets are flinching.
CoreWeave has $14.2B in loan facilities backed by chips and customer contracts. IREN just took $2.4B from Blue Owl to buy Nvidia GPUs.
Sound familiar?
In 2022, bitcoin miners bought machines on credit, watched collateral values collapse 85%, and the lenders came calling. Core Scientific went bankrupt. Stronghold handed back 26,200 miners to wipe out debt.
The key difference: an ASIC is a physical option on bitcoin's price. A GPU's value is tied to compute demand, which is still rising.
But Dario Amodei said it himself. If growth comes in at 5x instead of 10x, "there's no hedge on earth that could stop me from going bankrupt."
Amazon is spending $220B this year and expects to stay free cash flow negative for years. Some of its Nvidia racks went straight to warehouses because the data centers didn't have power to turn them on.
The question isn't whether AI is real. It's which players took on too much risk and put the cart before the horse.
Bitcoin's difficulty adjustment flushes out the overleveraged every two weeks. AI has no such mechanism.
