Could Your Family Recover Your Bitcoin Without You?

Most people who hear that question feel something shift. Because the honest answer is no. Or maybe. Or they haven't really thought about it...

I've been asking it for years. And I want to explain why it matters more than almost any other question a serious Bitcoin holder can ask.

The Bitcoin Dependency Problem

There's a concept I call "Bitcoin Dependency". It exists when your Bitcoin's survival depends entirely on you being present, alive, and available to provide the instructions.

Think about it honestly. Are you the only person who knows where the seed phrase is? The only person who knows which wallet software you use? The only person who could walk someone through a recovery? Has your spouse ever actually touched the hardware wallet? Does your executor know Bitcoin exists in your estate?

If the answer to most of those is no, you have a Bitcoin dependency. You are the password manager, the recovery procedure, the documentation, the inheritance plan, the single point of failure. Remove you from the equation, and the system may fail completely.

This is not a criticism. It is almost universal. I have spoken to dozens of serious Bitcoin holders who have spent years thinking about custody security, and almost no time thinking about custody continuity. They have secured their Bitcoin against hackers. They have not secured it against themselves.

Why This Is Not Something To Leave For Later

Estates are being settled with Bitcoin in them right now. Executors, lawyers, accountants, family members, are discovering that Bitcoin is unlike every other asset they have dealt with. There is no bank to call. No customer service line. No recovery option if the instructions do not exist.

The spouse who has never touched a seed phrase. The executor who has never opened a wallet. The lawyer who has never written will language that covers a hardware wallet. These are not hypothetical situations. They are happening in real families right now.

A Personal Story

My father died suddenly when I was twenty. He woke up one morning, went outside, and did not come back. No warning. No time to prepare.

What followed was seventeen years of figuring out what to do with inherited capital. There's no rulebook. There might be a roadmap, but it's more than likely made by someone else, which you haven't truly put your stamp on. Figure it out as you go. Learn by doing...

That experience shaped everything about how I think about Bitcoin. Not just how do you buy it. Not just how do you secure it. But what happens to it if something happens to you? What does your family do? What does your executor do? What does the person you love most do when they are grieving and trying to access something they have never touched before?

When I discovered Bitcoin in 2015 I started thinking about it through that lens immediately. And over the years, informally at first, I started helping other people think through it.

What a Family Bitcoin Plan Actually Is

The output of a Bitcoin Custody Architecture engagement, which is a service I am launching, is a document called a Family Bitcoin Plan.

It covers custody architecture, a clear documented description of how your Bitcoin is held, and why. Recovery procedures, step by step, written for someone with basic skills, not an expert. Inheritance considerations, how this integrates with your will, and what your executor needs to know. Family preparedness, the section most people skip entirely. Vulnerabilities analysis. And a prioritised action plan.

The document is physical. Printed. It should live in a fireproof safe next to your will. It is the treasure map. The document your family wishes existed if something unexpected happens.

Who This Is For

This is for someone who has accumulated meaningful Bitcoin wealth, six figures and above as a general guide, and who has a family, and a responsibility to make sure their Bitcoin does not disappear if something happens to them.

You self-custody or plan to. You value long-term thinking. You want to retain control. And you probably feel somewhat isolated in this decision because the people around you, your adviser, your accountant, your lawyer, do not fully understand what you are doing.

So What Am I Now Offering?

I am a Bitcoin Custody Architect. I help Bitcoin holders build a Family Bitcoin Plan, so their Bitcoin can be recovered, understood, and protected across generations. This is not financial advice. I do not hold keys. I do not take custody of assets. I help design the architecture.

The engagement is USD $4,444, fixed fee, everything included. There is also an annual review at USD $1,111 per year if you want it, because a Family Bitcoin Plan is a living document. Families change. Structures change. The plan needs to stay current as life evolves.

The discovery call is free. Thirty minutes. And not every application is accepted.

If your family cannot recover your Bitcoin without you, you do not have a Bitcoin custody plan. You have a Bitcoin dependency.
