Chef's notes#

For the best flavor, use 80/20 ground chuck beef. You can also customize the patties and add optional ingredients like mushrooms and onions for extra taste.

Directions#

  1. Mix together the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, seasoning salt, garlic powder, and black pepper in a large bowl.
  2. Form the mixture into patties, making them slightly larger than desired as they will shrink when cooked.
  3. Heat a pan over medium heat and fry each side of the patties for about 3-5 minutes or until well done.
  4. Set each finished patty on a plate lined with paper towel to catch any extra grease.
  5. For the gravy, mix together the beef stock, shoyu, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and cornstarch, whisking until smooth.
  6. In the same pan, melt one tablespoon of butter to caramelize the onions for about a minute, then fry the mushrooms for another minute or two.
  7. Melt the remaining butter and add the gravy mix to the pan, stirring until it thickens and simmers.
  8. In a separate pan, melt a slice of butter and cook a sunny side up egg.
  9. To assemble, scoop a generous serving of hot white rice on a plate, layer it with a hamburger patty, drizzle on the gravy, top with the egg, and garnish with green onions.
