The Other Tracks

One trail in the snow, a promise somebody means to come back. Then tracks crossing it, at an angle, from someone who read the line and didn't make it about themselves.

THE OTHER TRACKS

THE OTHER TRACKS

I walk the same line every night. Out past the last fence, up through the draw, back along the creek. Same route, same hour, so by morning the snow holds one trail, and it's mine.

That's the point of it. A trail is a promise that somebody was here and means to come back.

Two weeks in, I found tracks crossing mine. Not following. Crossing, at an angle, like whoever made them was headed somewhere of their own and didn't much care that I'd been there first.

I stood over them long enough for the cold to reach my knees. Somebody had read the line I'd been drawing in the dark and hadn't made it about themselves. Rarer than it sounds.

I didn't find them again the next night. I didn't look too hard, either. Some things get ruined by wanting them twice.

I finished the route. Made coffee. Went to work. Tomorrow I'll walk it again, and I won't be walking it for anyone.
