This is my brother-in-law Terry. We often go somewhere together for coffee. I had considered this painting finished in May, but over the last few days I found myself returning to it. I strengthened some of the definition and the sense of space, and in doing so became much more conscious of the light. Terry and the table sit largely in the shade of the umbrella and awning, while the cars and trees beyond are in sunlight. Even the table is divided between shadow and light. It is such an ordinary moment - someone sitting at a café drinking coffee - but perhaps that is partly what attracted me to it. Sometimes I don't fully understand what I have noticed until I paint it.
