This Week I visited a fortress in what was once German East Africa.

The place still carries the weight of authority and distance — a reminder of how far power once reached, and how long its traces remain. As I walked through the grounds, I became aware of a 160-year-old witness still living there.

It has seen flags change, footsteps come and go, orders given, silence return. It remembers heat, rain, waiting, and time passing without interruption.

Its identity reveals itself only if you pay attention to the way it moves through time — slowly, deliberately, carrying its own shelter wherever it goes.

A turtle — alive, unhurried, and quietly present — holding more history than many monuments ever will.
