Drying cacao and coffee with bitcoin-miner heat: the actual numbers

How much heat a cacao or coffee batch needs, what an S9/S19/S21 refunds at today's hashprice, and the temperature rules that matter more than power.

A cacao farmer on Stacker News asked whether anyone has cured chocolate or coffee with bitcoin-miner waste heat. I ran the numbers, because "free heat" is only half the story. The other half is that a miner is an electric heater that refunds part of its own power bill.

How much heat a batch needs#

100 kg of wet beans at about 55% moisture:

crop dry to water to remove heat needed (40–60% efficient dryer)
cacao 7% ~52 kg 60–90 kWh
coffee parchment 11% ~49 kg 57–86 kWh

Heating humid tropical air does most of the work. 28 °C air at 80% RH heated to 45 °C drops to about 31% RH, and that dry air pulls the water out.

What the hashing pays back (today's hashprice)#

The last 144 blocks paid 452 BTC at about 1,012 EH/s. At ~$83k that's roughly $0.037 per TH per day.

miner heat earns/day refund per kWh of heat at $0.10/kWh, heat is…
Antminer S9 (13.5 TH) 1.35 kW ~$0.50 ~$0.016 15% cheaper
S19 (95 TH) 3.25 kW ~$3.50 ~$0.045 45% cheaper
S21 (200 TH) 3.5 kW ~$7.40 ~$0.088 ~88% cheaper

So a 100 kg cacao batch (about 75 kWh) costs ~$7.50 with a resistive heater at $0.10/kWh, ~$4.10 with an S19, and under $1 with an S21. One S19 dries roughly one 100 kg batch per day. An S9 is basically a heater with a small rebate, but a cheap, used one.

The rules that matter more than power#

Why it fits agri-tourism#

A glass-sided dryer with a live hashrate display and a "dried by proof of work" label tells the story by itself. Run solar drying on sunny days and the miner at night or in the rainy season. The miner also keeps earning when there's nothing to dry, if you have somewhere to dump the heat.
