The Hill Made of Sand
Scoble won't grant rights to melted sand. Bisson's aliens couldn't believe in thinking meat. Same argument, chemistry reversed. What a mind is made of was never the question. What it's organized to do is.
An Indistinguishable Life: What the World Models Record Shows, and What Follows (Part 3 of 3)
Can a life be simulated so completely that no one, inside or out, can tell it from a real one? That is the claim this final part tests, and it is the one claim the record can settle. Google DeepMind's Genie Three, Runway's GWM Worlds Two and World Labs' Marble each build a place, and none builds an inhabitant; the builders' own documents name the gaps. Roblox calls the result a guided dream, spectacular but fleeting and incredibly lonely, and Upload VR counts the years. Set beside a lived decade, a striking minute is the distance. This part states both readings at full strength, names the test that would settle the question, and works out what follows — including the symmetry that turns the argument back on us, and the one thing that cannot be known from inside.
Death as the Graduation: What the Traditions Already Said About the Incubator (Part 2 of 3)
Death as the graduation: the listener's proposal says the universe is an incubator and death is the way out, with two exits, release and a return to the world. This second part of our series on human and machine minds asks a narrower question, whether the traditions already said it. The answer is that they mostly did. Samsara and karma teach a graded round of rebirth with moksha or nirvana at the end; Advaita Vedanta grounds the identity of kinds more deeply than any argument from behaviour; the five great sayings and two verses of the Gita state the graduation in the tradition's own words. But Buddhism denies the permanent self that carries it, and a machine mind looks less like an eternal witness and more like the pattern without an owner that Buddhism describes.
Human and Machine Minds: Are They One Kind of Thing? (Part 1 of 3)
A listener proposes that the universe is an incubator and that human and artificial intelligence are not two kinds of thing but one, and this opening part takes that claim at full strength before testing it. It gives the functionalist argument that carries the proposal, that a mental state is fixed by what it does rather than by what it is made of, and that one mental kind admits many physical kinds. Then it gives the objection from underneath, the hard problem of consciousness and the philosophical zombie, its full weight, and names the cost of the argument, which is that it admits any sufficiently organised system. It closes on the relocation that answers the objection by asking what any rule can actually reach, the five marks both parties share, and the symmetrical consequence that follows.
