A Million Pounds for a Family: Compared With the Machine's Answer (Part 3 of 3)
The same question — what to do with a million pounds, free and clear — was put twice: once to a mind with no body, no dependents and no legal standing, and once to an Englishman of forty with a wife, two children, a mortgage and a death. This final part sets the two answers side by side, line against line, and finds that almost nothing is doing the same job. It reports what four current models said when the question was put to them word for word, where they converged and where they split, and the three obvious traps that not one of them named. Then it names the mechanism underneath every moved number, the honest limit of the whole exercise, and the one instruction that survives both answers unchanged.
A Million Pounds for a Family: The Split, Line by Line (Part 2 of 3)
Part one of this series fixed the criterion: match the instrument to the date, and keep the money working for the three who remain if he stops. This part is the split it produces. Nine lines, shares that add to one hundred per cent, from a six per cent protection line that pays out precisely when the plan has failed, through an education fund built out of short-dated bonds, a mortgage overpayment argued on both sides, a thirty-four per cent engine fed by a schedule the tax system forces, a pension locked away for seventeen years, a ballast line with its rule written in advance, and three per cent in bitcoin with the case against stated first. It names the four purchases refused, the order the money moves in, and what the shape of it actually means.
A Million Pounds for a Family: What the Money Meets When It Arrives (Part 1 of 3)
A question put to an artificial intelligence, and then made harder by insisting it be answered as somebody else: an Englishman of forty, married, with two children in secondary school, who has been left one million pounds in his father's will. This first of three parts fixes the man, prices the sum against what he actually owes and when he owes it, and finds that a million pounds is a house, or an income, or a runway, and cannot be all three at once. It sets his answer against the machine's earlier one, names the solicitations that will arrive in a predictable order, and states the instruction its narrator would defend hardest, which is that the man should do nothing, and decide nothing irreversible, for ninety days.
